A Phuket pearl farm tour is a half-day look at how pearls are actually grown in the Andaman Sea. You visit a family-run farm in Sapam Bay on Phuket’s east coast, where pearl farming began in 1967 and is now in its third generation under the Amorn brand. Technicians show you the oysters, explain how pearls are seeded and harvested, and you finish at the showroom, where you can learn how pearl quality is graded before deciding whether to buy.

Highlights
- A short boat ride from Sapam Bay to the floating farm
- A demonstration of how pearls are seeded, grown and harvested
- The three types grown here: South Sea, Akoya and Mabe pearls
- Showroom visit with pearl jewellery and pageant crowns made by the company
- Learn the five quality factors: lustre, surface, shape, colour and size
What to expect on the Phuket pearl farm tour
- Sapam Bay: a small boat takes you a few hundred metres out to the farm, which sits on pontoons in the bay.
- The farm: a technician explains the farm’s history and the culturing process, and shows oysters in their mesh cages.
- Showroom: back on shore, a short drive takes you to the showroom for the exhibition on pearl production and the jewellery collection.
How pearls are grown
- South Sea pearls (Pinctada maxima oysters): the largest and most valuable, taking around three years to culture.
- Akoya pearls (Pinctada fucata): smaller, classic round pearls, taking around a year and a half.
- Mabe pearls (Pteria penguin): half-pearls grown against the shell, ready in about a year.
Only a share of each harvest produces perfectly round pearls, which is why shape has such an effect on price.
Phuket pearl quality and buying tips
- Ask which type of pearl you are looking at and where it was grown.
- Check the lustre (sharp reflections), surface (few blemishes), shape, colour and how well pearls on a strand or bracelet match.
- Ask for a certificate or written description with any significant purchase.
- There is no obligation to buy, and the visit is interesting even if you are only curious.
