Samui private boat rental: the southern islands
A cluster of small islands lies off Samui’s southern coast, a short ride from the piers at Thong Krut and the Phangka Bay area. They are quieter than the famous Ang Thong Marine Park and ideal for a half-day by private boat.
Koh Madsum (Pig Island)
A small island with soft white sand, famous for the friendly pigs that wander along the beach. It is a popular photo stop and good for a swim. A small landing fee is usually charged on the island.
Koh Tan
A larger, mostly quiet island with clear shallow water and coral, good for beginner snorkellers. Most of its residents moved to Samui years ago, so it has a peaceful, end-of-the-road feel.
Koh Rap
A smaller, quieter island nearby with a white-sand beach and reef, opened to visitors more recently.
Koh Si and Koh Ha
Small rocky islets off the south-west coast, often visited on short sunset cruises.
Choosing a private boat on Samui
- Longtail boat – the traditional Thai boat. Great value for small groups on the southern islands, with a relaxed pace.
- Luxury longtail – a longtail fitted with cushions, shade and better seating, for a more comfortable private trip.
- Private speedboat – faster, and able to reach Ang Thong Marine Park or Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan in a day.
- Catamaran or yacht – the most comfortable option for larger groups and sunset cruises.
When to go
The Gulf of Thailand is calmest from about February to September. From late October to December the north-east monsoon can bring rough seas, and small boats may not be able to go out. Morning trips usually have the calmest water. Sunset trips are best in the dry months.
Tips from our team
- Bring cash for island landing fees, drinks and tips.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a dry bag – longtails have limited shade.
- Check whether hotel transfers to the pier are included. Many private boats price them separately.
- Don’t feed the pigs junk food, and don’t touch or stand on coral.
FAQ
Can I still book this luxury longtail boat?
No. This boat no longer operates. Ask our team on WhatsApp and we will suggest a similar private boat on Samui.
Where do boats to Pig Island leave from?
Usually from piers on Samui’s south coast, such as Thong Krut or around Phangka Bay. Some tours also pick up from other parts of the island.
How long does a private boat trip to Koh Madsum and Koh Tan take?
A half-day of about four hours is usually enough for two islands. A full day lets you add Koh Rap or more snorkelling time.
Is a private boat suitable for families?
Yes. The southern islands are close to shore with calm, shallow water most of the year. Life jackets are provided.
Can I rent a boat for a sunset cruise?
Yes. Short sunset trips to the islets off the south-west coast are popular. Ask us for current options.
