Every January, just a short drive from Chiang Mai city, the quiet village of Bo Sang bursts into a vibrant explosion of colour, creativity, and cultural pride. The Bo Sang Umbrella & Sankampaeng Craft Festival is one of Thailand’s most unique and visually stunning events—celebrating centuries-old craftsmanship and the local artisan spirit.
Renowned for its delicate, hand-painted paper umbrellas made from Saa paper (mulberry bark), Bo Sang transforms into an open-air gallery where the streets are lined with thousands of colourful parasols in all sizes and designs. It’s not just about umbrellas—visitors can explore a wide variety of locally made crafts, from bamboo products and ceramics to silk, silverware, and traditional Thai art.
During the three-day festival, expect lively parades, beauty contests, cultural performances, and umbrella-painting demonstrations. At night, the village lights up with lanterns and local music, making it a magical experience for travellers and families alike.
Whether you’re a lover of traditional Thai art, a cultural explorer, or a photographer looking for a dreamlike setting, this festival is an unforgettable addition to your Thailand itinerary.
