For years, a “visa run” from Phuket meant an overnight minibus to the Malaysian border or Penang, or a day trip to Ranong, to leave Thailand and come back with a fresh stamp or a new visa from a Thai consulate. We no longer book this trip, but this guide explains how visa runs from Phuket work in 2026 and what has changed.

What is a visa run from Phuket?
A visa run is a short trip out of Thailand to reset your permission to stay. From Phuket the usual routes were:
- Ranong to Kawthaung (Myanmar): a same-day trip by road to Ranong, then a short boat crossing to Kawthaung and back.
- Satun or Sadao to Malaysia: land crossings in the far south, often combined with a night in Penang to apply for a visa at the Thai consulate in George Town.
- Fly out and back: a short flight from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore and back again.
Thailand visa run rules in 2026
Thailand’s entry rules changed in September 2026, so check your own nationality’s conditions before you plan anything:
- From 15 September 2026, the visa-exempt stay for many nationalities was cut from 60 days to 30 days, for tourism only.
- Visa-exempt travellers entering by land are limited to two land entries per calendar year (nationals of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei are excluded from this cap).
- Immigration officers can refuse entry to people who appear to be living in Thailand on back-to-back exemptions.
- Rules, fees and document lists for consular visas change often. Check the Thai embassy or consulate website, or the official Thai e-Visa site, before you travel.
Because of these changes, a same-day Thailand visa run by land is far less useful than it used to be. Many long-stay visitors now apply for the right visa before arriving, extend their stay at an immigration office in Thailand where allowed, or fly out and back.
How to do a Phuket visa run today
- Check your status first: note your entry date, permission-to-stay date and how many land entries you have used this year.
- Consider an extension: Phuket Immigration Office can extend some types of stay; requirements and fees vary.
- Flying is simplest: Phuket airport has many short international flights, and air entries are not counted in the land-entry cap.
- Going by land to Ranong or Malaysia: allow a long day, carry your passport, copies, photos and the cash you may need, and check border opening hours.
Tips
- Never overstay: fines are charged per day, and longer overstays can lead to bans.
- Carry proof of onward travel and accommodation when re-entering.
- Use only official government websites for visa applications.
- Keep printed copies of your passport and your latest entry stamp.
