Surf House Kata is a man-made wave on the road behind Kata Beach in Phuket, where you can try flowboarding or bodyboarding on a constant, shallow sheet of water. It is a fun way to get a feel for board riding without paddling out or waiting for waves, and it works on hot days and rainy ones. What is Surf House Kata?

Surf House Phuket uses a FlowRider machine that pumps a thin, fast layer of water up a padded slope. Beginners usually start lying down on a bodyboard, then move on to standing on a short flowboard. There is also a Surf House in Patong. Spectators can sit by the wave with food and drinks, which makes it popular with families and groups.

What to expect

• Sessions: sold by time, typically 1 or 2 hours, with riders taking turns on the wave.
• Instructors: staff explain how to ride and help beginners get started.
• Height limits: recent listings show a minimum height of about 107 cm for bodyboarding and 133 cm for stand-up flowboarding.
• Location: on Pakbang Road, a short walk from Kata Beach.

Tips

• Wear swimwear without zips, buckles or hard parts, and a rash vest if you have one.
• Arrive early so you have time to sign in and watch the riders before your turn.
• Riders who have been drinking will not be allowed on the wave.
• Late afternoon and evening are good times to go when the beach gets too hot.
