About 80 kilometres (50 miles) to the north of Bangkok is the city of Ayutthaya in Thailand. From the year 1350 until it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Siam and was a flourishing international commerce port. Ayutthaya Historical Park is an archaeological site that was created out of the ruins of the former city of Ayutthaya. The park is home to palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries, and statues. The park is located on an island that is in the middle of three rivers.
