Coral Island Phuket, known in Thai as Koh Hey, is a small island just off the south coast of Phuket, on the way to Racha Island. It takes only around 15-20 minutes by speedboat from Chalong Pier or Rawai, which makes it one of the easiest island trips from Phuket. With two white-sand beaches, shallow water and plenty of water sports, it is a favourite for families, first-time snorkellers and anyone who wants a beach day without a long boat ride.

Where is Coral Island Phuket?

Coral Island lies off Cape Panwa and Chalong Bay, south-east of Phuket’s southern tip. It is close enough to see from the Rawai and Cape Panwa coast. Because it is sheltered and near the mainland, boats can usually reach it even in the May to October monsoon season, when trips further out are often cancelled.

The beaches: Banana Beach and Long Beach

Banana Beach

Banana Beach is on the west side and is where most day-trip speedboats land. It is the livelier of the two, with restaurants, beach chairs, shops and a full menu of water sports. It is busiest from late morning to early afternoon, when the tour boats arrive.

Long Beach

Long Beach, on the east side, is longer and calmer, with shallow water, more shade and beach restaurants along the tree line. It suits families with small children and anyone who wants a quieter swim. A path through the island links the two beaches in around 10-15 minutes on foot.

Things to do on Coral Island

  • Snorkelling: the best spots are around the rocky ends of each beach, with reef fish and coral in clear water, especially from November to April. It is easy, shallow snorkelling rather than world-class diving.
  • Water sports: parasailing, banana boats, kayaking, sea walking and jet skis are offered on the beaches and paid locally.
  • Try diving: the calm, shallow water is popular for introductory dives.
  • Relax: rent a beach chair, have a Thai lunch and swim in calm water.

How to get to Coral Island

  • Day tour: the simplest option. Hotel pickup, speedboat from Chalong Pier, snorkelling gear and often lunch are bundled together. See the Coral Island tours below.
  • Private boat: a private speedboat or longtail from Rawai or Chalong lets you set your own times. A private catamaran charter is a relaxed option for bigger groups.
  • Combine with Racha Island: many private charters stop at Coral Island on the way back from Racha.

Facilities on the island

Both beaches have restaurants serving Thai food and drinks, small shops and beach chairs, with shade along the tree line. Card payments are limited, so bring enough cash for the day. Day tours usually include snorkel gear, but you can rent it on the beach if you come by private boat.

Best time to visit

November to April brings the calmest seas and the clearest water. Coral Island is still a good choice from May to October because it is close to shore and sheltered, though the water may be less clear. Arrive on an early boat or stay into the late afternoon to enjoy the beaches before and after the busiest hours.

Tips from our team

  • Bring cash: card payments on the island are limited.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and do not stand on or touch coral.
  • Agree water-sport prices before you start.
  • Wear water shoes around the rocky snorkelling areas.
  • A waterproof phone pouch is handy for photos in the water.
