The “Heaven Avatar” day trip from Phuket was named after the dreamlike scenery of Phang Nga, where limestone towers rise out of mangroves and the sea, much like the floating mountains in the film. Samet Nang She: the “Avatar” viewpoint near Phuket
Samet Nang She is a hilltop viewpoint in Takua Thung district, Phang Nga. It looks out over a wide sweep of mangroves and dozens of limestone islands in Phang Nga Bay. It is around an hour from Phuket Airport and about an hour and a half from Patong or Phuket Town by road.
- Best time: sunrise, when mist often hangs over the mangroves. Late afternoon is the next best time.
- Getting up: the final road up the hill is steep. Visitors usually park at the bottom and take a local pick-up truck shuttle, or walk up if fit.
- Fees: a small entrance fee and shuttle fee are charged locally. Check on the day, as these change.
- Nearby: a glass-floored skywalk has opened at a resort on the hill. It charges its own separate entry.
Avatar tour Phuket: the other stops
- Wat Suwan Khuha (Monkey Cave Temple): a temple built into a large cave near Phang Nga Town, with a long golden reclining Buddha. Monkeys live around the entrance, so keep bags closed and food out of sight.
- Wat Bang Thong (Wat Maha That Watchiramongkhon), Ao Luek, Krabi: a striking white and gold temple with a tall stupa and terraces, often photographed from across its pond.
- Rainforest waterfall: a swim stop in the forest. Water levels are highest in the green season.
- Longtail boat in the mangroves: a ride through mangrove channels and sea caves below Samet Nang She.

The temple features some fascinating things; for example, the prominent stupa, Phra Mahathat Chedi Si Thong enshrining the Buddha’s relics granted from King Rama X when he was Crown Prince, a Buddha image in the attitude of giving the first sermon measuring 3 metres wide across the lap and a lifelike statue of Luangpu Thuat with a measurement of a 9-metre-and-9-inch-wide span lap. |
