Phuket Snorkeling Tours | Dive into Crystal Clear Waters

Tours in Phuket

Phuket snorkeling tours take you to some of the clearest water in Thailand. Around the island and across the Andaman Sea you will find coral gardens, reef fish, turtles and dramatic limestone islands – and most of the best spots are only reachable by boat. This guide covers where to go, when to go and how to choose the right snorkelling trip for you.

Best snorkelling spots near Phuket

Similan Islands

The Similans are a protected national park about 70 km off the Phang Nga coast and offer the best visibility in the region, with granite boulders, white beaches and healthy reefs. The park opens only part of the year: the 2026-27 season runs from 15 October 2026 to 15 May 2027. Day trips are long (early pickup, fast speedboat crossing) but worth it for keen snorkellers.

Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi is the classic Phuket day trip. Snorkelling stops usually include Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah Bay and spots around Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island, where you can see parrotfish, angelfish and sometimes small reef sharks. Maya Bay itself is for viewing from the beach only – swimming is not allowed there – and the bay normally closes for a recovery period around August and September.

Khai Islands

The Khai islands (Khai Nok, Khai Nai and Khai Nui) are small sandy islands a short speedboat ride from Phuket’s east coast. The water is shallow and calm, which makes them a great choice for families and first-time snorkellers, and they are easy to combine with Phi Phi.

Coral Island (Koh Hey)

Just 15-20 minutes from Chalong, Coral Island is ideal for a half day. Shallow reefs off Banana Beach are good for beginners, though it can be busy in high season.

Racha Islands

Racha Yai and Racha Noi lie south of Phuket. Racha Yai has clear bays and gentle reefs, while Racha Noi is wilder and better suited to stronger swimmers and divers.

Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is famous for limestone karsts, sea caves and hongs (hidden lagoons) rather than coral. Water is often greener and less clear, so treat it as a sightseeing and kayaking trip with an occasional swim rather than a snorkelling day.

When is the best time to snorkel in Phuket?

The best conditions are from November to April, when the north-east monsoon brings calm seas and clear water on the Andaman side. From May to October the south-west monsoon can bring wind, swell and lower visibility. Many trips still run in the green season – especially to sheltered spots on the east side – but routes may change on the day and the Similan Islands are closed from mid-May to mid-October.

Choosing between Phuket snorkeling tours

  • Speedboat: fastest way to reach Phi Phi, Khai and the Similans, with more stops in a day.
  • Catamaran: more space and comfort, a slower relaxed pace and often a sunset option.
  • Big boat or ferry tours: smoother on rough days and usually cheaper, but fewer stops.
  • Private boat: choose your own timing and avoid the busiest bays.

Good examples are our luxury speed catamaran to Phi Phi and Khai Island and the Phi Phi and Maiton Island speed catamaran, which combine several snorkelling stops in one day.

Snorkelling for beginners

You do not need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy snorkelling on an organised trip. Boats provide masks, snorkels and life jackets, and crews choose calmer spots when beginners are on board. Practise breathing through the snorkel in shallow water first, keep your life jacket on if you are unsure, and stay close to the boat or guide.

What to bring

  • Swimwear, towel and a change of clothes
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest or long-sleeved swim top
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • A waterproof phone pouch
  • Seasickness tablets for longer speedboat trips
  • Cash for national park fees if not included, and for drinks

Responsible snorkelling

  • Never stand on, touch or kick the coral.
  • Do not feed the fish – it changes their behaviour and harms the reef.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen or cover up with a rash vest instead.
  • Take all rubbish back to the boat.
