Island tours from Phuket

Island trips are the main reason most visitors book Phuket excursions. The Andaman Sea around Phuket is full of limestone islands, clear water and white beaches, and most are within easy reach by speedboat or catamaran.

Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay

The most famous day trip. A typical tour visits Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Phi Phi Don and Bamboo Island or Khai Island. Maya Bay closes every year for about two months (usually August and September), and swimming in the bay is not allowed, but you can walk on the beach. Early departures are the best way to avoid the crowds. For a relaxed option, our Phi Phi and Maiton Island speed catamaran trip adds a sunset stop.

Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is famous for its towering limestone karsts, sea caves and James Bond Island. Many tours include sea canoeing through caves into hidden lagoons. The bay is sheltered, so it is a good choice even in the rainy season.

Coral Island and Racha Islands

These islands south of Phuket are close and easy to reach, which makes them ideal for families and for half-day or catamaran trips. Racha Yai has clear water and soft sand; Coral Island is good for water sports.

Similan and Surin Islands

For the best snorkelling and diving, the Similan and Surin national parks are hard to beat. They are only open in the dry season, roughly mid-October to mid-May, and most day trips leave from piers near Khao Lak, north of Phuket, with transfers from Phuket hotels.

Phuket sightseeing and city tours

If you have three days or more, set aside half a day for the island’s culture. A good sightseeing tour usually includes:

  • The Big Buddha, with views over Chalong Bay and Kata
  • Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most important temple
  • Old Phuket Town, with colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés and street art
  • Viewpoints such as Karon Viewpoint and Promthep Cape at sunset

Most city tours include an air-conditioned vehicle and hotel pickup. Hiring a private driver for the day is a flexible alternative if you want to choose your own stops. Please dress modestly at temples: cover your shoulders and knees.

Adventure activities in Phuket

Phuket’s hilly, forested interior is perfect for active days out:

  • Zipline parks: several courses in the jungle around Kathu and Patong, with ziplines, sky bridges and abseils. Most accept children from about 4 years.
  • Paramotoring: a tandem flight with an instructor for a bird’s-eye view of Phuket’s coastline.
  • Horse riding: guided beach rides in the north-west, suitable for beginners.
  • Water sports: kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling at beaches like Rawai, Nai Harn and Kata, and on islands such as Naka.
  • Golf: Phuket has several well-known golf courses.
  • Plane spotting: at Mai Khao Beach, planes land just above your head on the approach to the airport.

How to choose the right tour

Think about the season

The dry season, roughly November to April, has the calmest seas and is best for longer boat trips. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings more rain and bigger waves on the west coast. Tours still run, but some may change route or be cancelled for safety. Sheltered trips such as Phang Nga Bay, and land activities, are good choices then.

Shared or private?

Shared tours are the best value and a sociable way to travel. A private boat or driver costs more, but you choose the pace and stops, and it can be good value for families and groups.

Check what is included

Before you book, check whether hotel pickup, lunch, snorkelling gear and national park fees are included. National park fees are often paid separately in cash on the day.

Is 3 days enough in Phuket?

Three days gives you a good taste of the island. A simple plan is:

  • Day 1: a sightseeing tour (Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Old Town), then a sunset at Promthep Cape
  • Day 2: a full-day island tour to Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay
  • Day 3: a morning adventure activity, an afternoon on the beach, and an evening show or a walk along Bangla Road in Patong

With five days or more, add the Similan Islands (in season), a catamaran day or a trip to Krabi.
