Coral Island Phuket, known in Thai as Koh Hey, is the easiest island escape from Phuket: about 6 km off the south coast, only around 15 minutes by speedboat from Chalong or Rawai. Is Coral Island Phuket worth visiting?
Yes, if you go in with the right expectations. Coral Island is not a remote, untouched island. It is a lively beach destination with restaurants, sun loungers and speedboats coming and going. In return you get calm, clear water close to Phuket, short travel times and lots to do. Snorkelling is pleasant around the rocky ends of the beaches, with tropical fish and good visibility in the high season, though it is not in the same league as the Similan or Racha Islands.
The beaches on Coral Island
Banana Beach
Banana Beach, on the west side, is the island’s best-known beach. It is where many tour boats land, with organised loungers, umbrellas, restaurants and water sports. It is busiest from late morning to early afternoon. Banana Beach is reached as part of tours that include it in their programme. Not every Coral Island trip goes there, so check before you book.
Long Beach
Long Beach, on the east side, is a longer stretch of white sand with shallow water and more shade. It tends to be calmer than Banana Beach and is a good choice for families with small children. At low tide the water near the shore can be very shallow, so high tide is better for swimming.
Kahung Beach and the rest of the island
Some tours use other landing points such as Kahung Beach. A dirt path through the trees links the main beaches in about 10 to 15 minutes’ walk, but keep an eye on the time so you do not miss your boat.
Things to do on Coral Island
- Swimming and snorkelling: calm, clear water off the beaches, best from November to April
- Parasailing and banana boats: classic beach thrills, usually with age and weight limits
- Try scuba diving or sea walking: a first taste of diving with an instructor, no experience needed
- Kayaking and paddle boarding where available
- Relaxing: a lounger, a cold drink and a Thai lunch by the sea
Activities are usually paid as extras. They can cost more if bought on the beach, so it is worth asking about them when you book your trip.
How to get to Coral Island from Phuket
Most visitors go on an organised trip, which includes hotel pickup, a speedboat from the south coast and a return transfer. Options include:
- Half-day trips (morning or afternoon) for a quick beach break
- Full-day trips, often with lunch and snorkelling gear, sometimes combined with Racha Island
- Sunset sailing catamaran trips that stop at Coral Island and continue to Promthep Cape
- Private charters by longtail, speedboat or yacht, for your own timing

Best time to visit
November to April brings calm seas, sunshine and the best water clarity. Coral Island is close to Phuket and fairly sheltered, so trips usually run through the May to October monsoon too, though some days are cancelled for weather and the water is less clear. For fewer people, go on an early boat or choose an afternoon trip, after the midday crowds have left.
Tips for your day
- Take care on the floating jetties. They move with the waves and passing boats and can be hard to walk on.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on or touch coral.
- Bring a dry bag, a hat and water shoes for rocky areas.
- Wear a life jacket for water sports and follow the staff’s instructions.
- Carry some cash for drinks, toilets and extras on the island.
